SUMMARY:The Treaty & Me 2025: Unsettled Bliss – It’s OK to be Uncomfortable
DESCRIPTION:In the first of four dates in the Treaty & Me series for 2025\, Dr Elizabeth Cook explores the notion of Unsettled Bliss\, and why it’s OK to be uncomfortable. \n“We perform our banal everyday activities of whiteness as normal and natural\, so normal\, that they are considered the universal\, common sense\, rational way to be for EVERYBODY!” \nIn this talk\, based on her book\, ‘Unsettled Bliss: Whiteness in Aotearoa\,’ Dr Elizabeth Cook explores how (often unconscious) racism operates in our everyday actions within whānau\, workplaces\, institutions and organisations. She speaks to the 1835 Declaration of Independence onwards\, addressing white settler occupation to the present day\, its impact on indigenous land and the people of this place\, ngā iwi Māori\, and the continuing consequences. \n“The aim is to be woke\, not asleep or dead\,” says Dr Cook. “Knowledge is liberation\, along with action to change the cruelties.” \nIf you are interested in deepening your understanding of social issues\, wealth disparity\, and political structures\, this talk is for you. \nDr Elizabeth Ann Cook is a writer\, thinker\, and social critic with a passion for challenging complacency. A sixth-generation non-Māori with English\, Irish Catholic\, and Welsh ancestry\, she was born and grew up in Whangārei before settling mostly in Ōtautahi. \nHer diverse career includes the release of four albums of original music; performing live as a singer\, songwriter and actor; and teaching Te Reo Māori and drama. In 2021\, she completed a PhD in Sociology\, subsequently extending her lifelong engagement with critical thinking into non-fiction writing\, releasing ‘Unsettled Bliss’ in 2025. Her work examines how everyday behaviours reinforce harmful social and economic systems\, and she is particularly interested in deconstructing language\, power\, and privilege. \nAn avid student of Aotearoa’s history\, Cook has been influenced by scholars such as Moana Jackson\, Ani Mikaere\, Vincent O’Malley\, Ranginui Walker\, and Alan Ward\, as well as international thinkers including Achille Mbembe\, Frantz Fanon\, Cedric Robinson\, and Judith Shklar. \nThe Treaty & Me series is hosted by Network Waitangi Whangārei. Over four Wednesdays from 23 July until 13 August\, respected Pākehā and community voices will speak about the Treaty / Te Tiriti from their own experience and research. \nThere are 2 sessions on each date – 12-2pm and 7-9pm – all at 116 Bank St\, Whangārei. Doors open 30 minutes before session start times – Free coffee\, tea\, soup & snacks will be served. \nThe talks are for everyone\, but particularly those keen to explore how Te Tiriti is key to New Zealand’s harmonious future. \nSpeakers will be followed by a facilitated Q&A session\, so please bring your curiosity\, openness and questions. \nAll talks are FREE – Koha appreciated (bring cash on the day).

DESCRIPTION:Te Kupenga by Ngahuia Harrison\nWhangarei Art Museum\non now until 5 October 2025\n\nThis exhibition marks the first public presentation of Harrison’s broader research project titled Ngā Pōito i te Kupenga o Toi te Huatahi — The Netfloats in the Net of Toi te Huatahi.\nAt its centre is the kupenga\, or net—a metaphor for the moana as a connective structure\, sustaining a people in their ancestral place. The pōito\, Ngātiwai’s offshore islands\, keep this net afloat. Understood in this way\, the ocean is not a void between habitable zones but a lived space of interdependence and accountability. The Net resists the flattening of Māori experience into a single narrative\, emphasising the polyvalent nature of the complex histories involved.\nThrough photography\, video\, and archival material\, it shows how Ngātiwaiknowledge continues to shape their relationships with the natural world\, and asks the viewer to imagine an understanding of conservation that acknowledges its roots in both occupation and in traditions of coexistence\, sustenance and intergenerational care.

SUMMARY:BEAT PHONIQUE ft DirdyGerdi B2B Mia Kober and Kevvy Small
DESCRIPTION:Join us for another special evening of Underground House beats and grooves featuring your festival faves DirdyGerdi playing B2B with Mia Kober\, alongside with your host Kevvy Small. \n\nSat\, 24 May 8pm – 1am\n\nBeer & Loathing \n\n\nFriends\, creative collaborators\, and co-pilots behind the decks — DirdyGerdi and Mia Kober are the beating heart of Silk Collective\, a platform championing underground music and connecting communities across New Zealand and beyond. \n\n\nDirdyGerdi is a driving force in New Zealand’s underground scene\, known for her dynamic sets and infectious energy behind the decks. Her performances blend groove\, sass\, and bold rhythms\, creating spaces where dancers feel confident\, playful\, and free. A regular across New Zealand’s festival circuit and a familiar face on European dancefloors\, she champions co-creation\, underground culture\, and cross-cultural connection. \n\n\nMia Kober\, meanwhile\, is the maestro of silky sounds and soulful basslines\, weaving deep\, genre-fluid journeys that stretch beyond the music itself. Her intuitive feel for the dancefloor has shaped memorable sets at festivals like Shipwrecked\, Splore and Rhythm & Alps\, cementing her reputation as a vital voice in the scene. \n\n\nTogether\, their synergy is magnetic — a true merging of two distinct yet complementary styles. Their B2B sets spark dancefloors with groove\, emotion\, and unexpected turns\, blurring the lines between individuality and shared vision. From sun-soaked festivals to late-night dancefloors in Berlin\, whether behind the decks or curating spaces through Silk Collective\, DirdyGerdi and Mia Kober craft experiences that are soulful\, intentional and deeply rooted in underground culture. \n\nBeat Phonique continues the decades long celebration and passion found in House Music by Kevvy Small\, by bringing quality events and underground parties that leave people wanting more.\nRenowned for delivering stonkin banger sets to the dance floor and instrumental in creating a house music following in Whangarei\, Kevvy has been a constant presence and foundational part of the ever growing scene here in the North.

SUMMARY:Alex Chalmers - Broken World
DESCRIPTION:In Broken World\, Alex Chalmers (b. 1991\, Whangārei) offers a nuanced meditation on the impermanence of power\, using found objects to explore cycles of dominance and decline. The phrase “caput mundi” (meaning “head of the world”) serves as a conceptual anchor for the work\, drawn directly from the branding displayed on construction hoardings across Rome\, the source of the discarded materials used in this exhibition. Originally a declaration of the city’s historic centrality\, this phrase now exists in a liminal state\, printed on temporary barriers that both conceal and advertise the city’s transformation. Chalmers highlights the tension between Rome’s imperial legacy and its present-day reality as a site of perpetual reconstruction\, gesturing toward the broader human impulse to build\, conquer\, and endure. His transformation of “caput” into “kaput” (a colloquialism for “broken”) subtly reframes the narrative\, not as a simple critique of Rome’s legacy\, but as an inquiry into the fragility of all systems of authority\, past and present. \nThis tension\, between grandeur and decay\, construction and collapse\, is neither a lament nor a celebration but an open-ended reflection. Rome\, layered with centuries of rebuilding\, offers an apt setting for such exploration\, yet Chalmers’ vision extends beyond any single place or moment in time. His work resists a linear reading of history\, instead embracing ruins as sites of ambiguity: objects that speak simultaneously to past ambition and future possibility. By combining materials from his homeland Aotearoa New Zealand with those from contemporary Rome\, where he currently resides\, Chalmers creates a dialogue between distant geographies\, gesturing towards the way power leaves an imprint across landscapes and generations. \nThe exhibition transforms the Whangārei Art Museum into a simulated construction site\, positioning the museum itself as an evolving structure\, shaped by shifting ideologies and priorities. Construction barriers and industrial materials reinforce this sense of flux\, prompting reflection on whose histories are preserved and who gets to influence or create cultural narratives. In this environment\, the museum is not simply a space of display but an active participant in the exhibition’s themes: a place where meaning is continually dismantled and rebuilt. \nA central part of Broken World is a decommissioned elevator\, removed from its shaft and suspended in space. Stripped of function\, the elevator is no longer a conduit for movement\, but an artifact of halted progression. Where elevators typically embody upward mobility and economic ascent\, here they exist in limbo\, exposing the hidden infrastructure that once enabled their function. This state of suspension mirrors a more holistic sense of uncertainty in the present moment\, as systems once thought to be stable are now revealed to be precarious\, subject to forces beyond their control. \nThe fragility of power\, the instability of progress and the cyclical nature of history reverberate throughout Broken World. As global alliances shift and historical patterns resurface\, the exhibition’s themes feel increasingly urgent. Like the ruins of past civilisations\, the tottering edifices of the present moment are marked by competing visions of order and transformation\, raising the question: What happens when the systems we rely on falter? In this sense\, Broken World is not simply a reflection on the past\, but an invitation to consider the unfinished nature of a future suspended between what was\, what is\, and what might yet emerge. \n  \n \n  \nArtist talk: More Info
