SUMMARY:The New Existentialists | The Woodshed
DESCRIPTION:The New Existentialists band live at The Woodshed\, Whangārei\, on Saturday 27 September 2025. \nWest Auckland psychedelic renegades the New Existentialists are venturing north to Whangarei for the very first time! \nAlso on the bill is Moppy\, the solo project of Thom Burton of Guardian Singles fame. \nFormed in West Auckland circa 2012 by songwriting legend George Henderson\, and named after one of English philosopher Colin Wilson’s primary themes\, The New Existentialists could be best described as a mix of “freakbeat\, softcore\, and austere psychedelia”.\n\nThey have released 3 albums and an EP and have another album ‘Bad Astrology’ about to be released by the Austrian label Zelle Records. \n“The new Existentialists\, are a fascinating West Aucks alternative live band that can actually play crafted songs\, and have the Grit and Guvara of free-thinking standup\, amplified melodies of an articulating punk band. Its requirement to make the hairs on the back of your neck standup and boogie to the garage-esque lyrically profound homegrown existentialism led by the legendary George Henderson\, song smith. From past bands\, The And band\, the Spies\, and the Puddle. A gig for the people\, curious\, and seeking the exclamation mark on Aotearoa’s voice of the alternative. Come along to the woodshed\, get your socks blown off.” \n“George D. Henderson of the Puddle and New Existentialists… has always had a mainline to melodies and appealing pop structures.” – Graham Reid\, Elsewhere \n“…since the mid-70s George Henderson has been constantly engaged in an obscure but utterly uncompromising investigation-cum-pilgrimage through the ‘secret’ side of music\, thought and the fine arts in this country” – Bruce Russell\, Rip It Up \n“Henderson has an almost shamanic knack of writing neatly concise pop songs that are riddled with hooks and melodies…the real magic lies in Henderson’s innate ability to write songs you think you’ve heard before. They just instantly click.” – Kiran Dass\, The NZ Listener \n  \nCatch them live at The Woodshed\, Whangārei\, on Saturday 27th September. \nThis is a chance to see one of New Zealand’s most thoughtful and powerful underground bands in a setting that brings the music up close. \nDoors open at 8pm and it’s $20 on the door 🎟 / BYO! \nFacebook event page \nFind them on Bandcamp https://thenewexistentialists.bandcamp.com/track/the-garden-of-earthly-delights \n  \nStay tuned to more of  Beagle’s favourite local events here

SUMMARY:I felt like some watcher\, divining skies | Jamie Chapman & Hayley Theyers Exhibition @ Hangar Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Jamie Chapman presents a series of intimate paintings while Hayley Theyers exhibits a collection of Surrealist photographs. Exhibition at Hangar Gallery\, Whangarei. \n‘I felt like some watcher\, divining skies’ Exhibition opening preview night at Hangar Gallery 5:30-8pm Friday 26th September 2025 \nFull exhibition dates 26/09/25 – 24/10/25 \nFacebook Event Page \nHangar Gallery Website Event Page \nStay tuned to more of  Beagle’s favourite local events here \n  \n\nJamie Chapman is a contemporary painter based in Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland\, New Zealand. Born in the United Kingdom\, his family moved to Whangārei when he was about two years old\, and that early life in Northland has informed much of his artistic sensibility. (jamiechapman.co.nz) \nAfter high school in Whangārei\, Chapman pursued studies at Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design in Auckland\, later completing both a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) and a Master of Fine Arts at Elam School of Fine Arts\, University of Auckland. (foenandergalleries.co.nz) \nChapman’s painting practice lives at the intersection of figurative oil painting and image-based media. He draws inspiration from both photographic and filmic modes—altering source images via cropping\, shifts in colour\, reframing\, and other transformations—and uses these tools to question how we see and understand pictures in a contemporary world. (foenandergalleries.co.nz) \nHe is known for several “series” of works: portraits\, self-portraits\, and explorations of mood\, atmosphere\, and altered vision. His recent works show a loosened brushstroke\, more expressive colour\, and a willingness to surprise both himself and his audience. (creativematters.co.nz) \nJamie Chapman has won a number of recognitions\, including the Joe Raynes Scholarship (University of Auckland\, 2012) and the National Youth Art Award (ArtsPost\, Hamilton\, 2013). His works are held in public collections\, including the Wallace Arts Trust. \n  \n\nHayley Theyers is a photographic artist based in Auckland\, Aotearoa New Zealand. Her work inhabits the borderlands between memory\, myth\, and the imagination — often drawing on childhood stories\, fairytales\, folklore\, and the uncanny to explore themes of gender\, identity\, and the inner terrain of dreams. (artache.com) \nHer style is theatrical\, whimsical\, and richly symbolic; she frequently reinterprets familiar myths through a feminist lens\, employing visual metaphors and narrative fragments to interrogate the ways we see women\, nature\, and the liminal spaces between waking and sleeping. (artache.com) \nSome notable exhibitions of Theyers’ work include: \n\n“Ex Libris” (Photospace Gallery\, 2022) — a series inspired by early illustrated Victorian children’s books\, reading as an exploration of how books shape memory and imagination. (photospacegallery.com)\n“Suite of Tales” (Pea Sea Art\, Port Chalmers\, 2023) — intertwining dream imagery\, childhood objects\, and the stories hidden in shadows. (PhotoForum)\nParticipation in group shows such as The Art of Death\, Bitter Harvest\, and Communicating Vessels\, where her work often dialogues with occult\, mythological\, spiritual\, or folkloric motifs. (PhotoForum)\n\nTheyers is drawn to work that unsettles\, that evokes both nostalgia and strangeness. She uses symbols\, dreams\, and narrative fragments to explore subtleties of the inner self\, especially from a female perspective. Her photographs are not merely representations but invitations into liminal realms where the familiar becomes uncanny. (artache.com) \nwww.hayleytheyersphotography.nz

SUMMARY:Sika Sound Journey
DESCRIPTION:This powerful experience is like a soundtrack that is crafted to go with your life. \nSomething between an ancient ceremony and a movie soundtrack. \nPlease bring a yoga mat\, pillow and blanket. Be prepared to drop into a deep space. \nDoor sales will be available if there is space. Advanced booking is recommended. \nSika’s Sound Journeys are truly unique. They are sonic explorations that feature didgeridoos\, drums\, flutes\, voice and orchestral elements.
A collection of foraged sounds from objects he has recorded in nature\, add even more textures. Many of his sounds are completely unrecognisable and abstract. Immersed in this cocoon of abstract sound\, we can find ourselves in the most surprising places in our mind. In this timeless realm\, beyond the normal limitations of rational reality\, anything is possible.\nAn epic adventure deep inside yourself. \nJourney to worlds within worlds on incredible sound waves. \nSika creates a safe space to relax deeply and connect with our inner guidance. This Sound Journey begins and ends with a short guided visualisation. \nThere will be two journeys with an interval. Most people choose to lie down\, so once again\, please bring a yoga mat\, pillow and blanket to get really comfortable. \nA journal is also recommended.

SUMMARY:The Amber Temple | With DJs JuanT & MechG
DESCRIPTION:A double billing to take you through an immersive night of music and movement\, first up we have ACT 1 – The Amber Temple. \nAn original music and interpretive dance collaboration between singer-songwriter Julian Temple and contemporary dancer Amber Stephens\, The Amber Temple marries mysticism with gritty\, ghoulish escapades of rogues and renegades. Vignettes of characters similar to you\, similar to me\, similar to someone you may have been or may one day become\, all on the path towards the Amber Temple. \nFrom the bowels of the molten earth\, to the jowls of the predatory opportunist\, to the angel casting light from celestial constellations\, you will find yourself wrapped in a web from a sliver of time\, a faraway place\, perhaps an unknown space\, as musician and dancer weave their tall tales of trials and tribulations\, mortal life and looming death\, unwavering love and venomous hate\, environmentalism and satirical social commentary. \nTemple\, known mostly for his work in the eponymous Julian Temple Band has written all new works for the project while Stephens\, a trained contemporary ballet dancer and choreographer who ran her own dance company in Vienna\, has choreographed the interpretive dance for this unique emotive performance. \nThis show marks the northern-most end of their 2025 NZ winter tour. \n“A live dancer added a visceral element to an already emotional performance. Having a responsive artist interacting and interpreting the music through movement only heightened the experience. It bridged the gap between performer and audience.”\n– Ed Castelow – Dictaphone Blues \n“You’ll be a converted fan of The Amber Temple before they’ve even finished their first song. There’s an obvious sense of originality\, coupled with carefully crafted dance moments and some of the most intense and outstanding folk songwriting you’ve heard. There’s a feeling though that nothing is premeditated and that improvisation is the star of the show – the kind of performance that requires decades of experience. Luckily for us\, Julian and Amber have this in spades. Do yourself a favour\, I guarantee you’ve seen nothing like it.”\n– Sam Cullen – Singer/Songwriter \nThis beguiling blend of folk-based performative storytelling through live music and dance\, is followed by Act 2 – DJs Juan T & Mech G – who will guide you into the second part of the night\, where you can put your own feet to the dancefloor and become a part of the story yourself. \nA chance to dance through the night with a quality PA\, magical lighting and a blend of music incorporating elements of folk\, indie\, electro\, psychedelia\, world beat and spy lounge blending into more modern electronica as the night goes on. \nDoors open at 7pm\, The Amber Temple performs at 7:30\, and DJs take you through to midnight before we head home with happy feet and satisfied souls.
